Halesworth Literary Connections

Philip Moore, a medical writer who practiced 'physic' in Halesworth produced two books ...

'The Hope of Health' - published in Halesworth 1564.

'A Fourtie Yeres Almanache with a prognostication' published in 1567.

The Rev. John Argall, who was presented to the Rectory in 1580 and died in 1606, was an actor in his youth and appeared before Queen Elizabeth at Oxford in 1566. He published ...

'De vera penitential' in 1604, and

'Introductio ad artem dialecticam' in 1605 .

John Kirby, the Suffolk topographer, was born in Halesworth in 1690, and published

 'The Suffolk Traveller' a road book with antiquarian notices in 1735, with new editions up to 1820 being issued.

He also completed a

'Map of the County of Suffolk' in 1736, of which an improved edition was published by his sons in 1766.

His portrait was painted by the famous Suffolk artist Gainsborough.
