John Kirby,
the Suffolk topographer, was born in Halesworth in 1690, and published
'The Suffolk Traveller'
a road book with antiquarian notices in 1735, with new editions up to
1820 being issued.
He also
completed a
'Map of the County of Suffolk'
in 1736, of which an improved edition was published by his sons in
1766.
His
portrait was painted by the famous Suffolk artist Gainsborough.
